NGO Visit

Samarthanam

Trust for the Disabled has been working since 1997 to empower the visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged people in India. The Trust is working to support the visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged to keep in pace with the rest of the society by providing quality education, accommodation, nutritious food, vocational training, placement based.

he presentation on Samarthanam was given by a blind girl and the ease with which she handled the computer and gave her speech, itself commended the efforts put on by the organization. She proved with her ability how Samarthanam is working for imparting technical skills to blind youths and developing them for running their own enterprises.

Samarthanam was our last NGO visit for the day. The day thus ended with lots of information on different organizations and their areas of operation. It was very fruitful as we came to know about four different arenas of business development; viz, mid-day meals, learning science while playing, disposal of toxic biomedical waste and technical training to differently abled children capacitating them to live independently. Taking this as a beginning, I look forward to visit more such organizations in the coming months that will enlighten me and help me in my pursuit for enterprise development.

ToxicLinks:
Toxics Link is an environmental NGO, dedicated to bring toxics related information into the public domain, both relating to struggles and problems at the grassroots as well as global information to the local levels. Started in 2006 in Hubli, Toxic Links have been able to cover 8 government hospitals till date. According to Sri Doreswami, Project Coordinator Toxic Links, it was difficult to convince the hospital administration to implement change and adopt pollution free methods for waste disposal, but ultimately with lots of persuasion, advocacy and training the result was finally achieved.

We visited one of the model dispensaries adopted by Toxic Links for implementing proper waste disposable systems at Hubli – Dharwad road. We were guided by, Senior Training Officer of Toxic Links to Navanagar Dispensary., Pharmacist and in-charge of the dispensary, showed us around the clinic. She displayed the

4 waste bins, red, blue, yellow green

For disposing different types of medical waste. She explained that the red bin is used for disposing biotechnological waste, blue for infected plastic waste, yellow for anatomical waste and green for biodegradable waste. All the waste from their dispensary is collected by CIF (Common Treatment Facility) center for final disposal. She also showed the Mercury Spill Kit, Needle Cutter, masks, gloves and sharp container bin given by Toxic Links for maintaining proper cleanliness in the dispensary.

We thought it was doing a very good job because before  that Hospital was not separated  and every west they mix it effected on the Nature and people also.
